A Colourful Dash

Posted on Sep 19 2005
Life in the early fifties in Kashmir, was not very pleasant. Shortages of electricity were common, and so were other amenities. The damp cold meant being shut indoors for days at a stretch, only to be let out to go to school. This was like being sent from the frying pan to the fire.

Womenspeak

Posted on Jul 22 2005
Now having reached an age when I can pat a girl on her cheeks and get away with it, I feel it my duty to instruct youngsters, so that they do not make the follies I made.

Open Letter to the Health Minister

Posted on Jun 27 2005
Dear Dr. Ramadoss, When we were children my sister's favorite film was Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje. By today's standards it was a garishly made film with gaudy colors and very artificial behavior of characters. That is beside the point, the film made no impact on my sister; she never developed any great affection for either music or dance.

All the Animals in the Zoo

Posted on Jun 20 2005
“Ghooi's house?” asked the old man, “see the last but one building in this row? The one with a big black dog who barks his head off if you approach the gate, that's the one.” Not a very complimentary description either of the dog or the house, but that is how neighbours used to give directions to our house. The dog was only one of the many denizens of our house. The greatest attraction was the deer.

Of Birds and Bees

Posted on Jun 10 2005
The minute a bird wakes up, he or she thinks it is their sacred duty to make a racket. For 30 long years, I had no objection to this. Being a city dweller my interaction with birds was limited to those served on the table.

Rani's English

Posted on Feb 8 2005
Don't get me wrong; Delhiites just do not corrupt English with Hindi and Punjabi. They also corrupt Hindi and Punjabi with English. When you are introduced to someone, he or she is apt to ask you in chaste Hindi: “Aap kahaa se belong karte hai?” The word 'belong' put in the middle of Hindi words gives you a feeling of comfort, especially if you are poor in Hindi.

Wanted- A Short Bride!

She looked at me, her deep blue eyes showing a gamut of emotions and her mouth working up a steam to whisper something wonderful to me. "She speak no English, only German," answered a tall, Teutonic beauty that hurried down to help us communicate. This is the trouble with Germany...

The Unpaid Dowry

Posted on Apr 21 2004
After all, Kesar was his responsibility, not the panchayat's. Had the panchayat come to put a balm on every bruise and cut she had suffered while playing? Did the panchayat members know how to comb and tie a little girl's hair?

The Lottery

Posted on Aug 4 2003
After graduation, we thought we would go separate ways. Shekhar joined the industry while I joined the Central Government. Despite the fact that both had transferable jobs, it was a coincidence that we spent most of the years together in the same city. It has been mostly either Mumbai or Delhi and a single three year stint in Calcutta.

To M'am With Love - Read The Original Conclusion

Posted on Mar 26 2003
Evelyn became the centre of attention of her fifty-odd students. They flocked to her house after college and on Sundays, many carrying gifts from their gardens or fields. A basket of mangoes, a medium sized jack fruit, vegetables of the season, all found their way to her table. As always, she shared out the goodies she made out of these and what a cook she was! Jackfruit cake was one

The Portrait

Posted on Mar 21 2003
What you have heard is right, Duchess. The home of the Vinci's is truly comfortable without being opulent and the tables there full of meat and wine. The beds of fine quality give restful sleep to the weary. But what the heart yearns for is the need to be with those who understand and appreciate the finer aspects of life. Art is not the construction of a chapel or a bridge. Neither of those two is

Matriculation Blues

Posted on Jan 22 2003
In return for the chattak, most of us were willing to tell Sharad's father that he was an outstanding student of the class. In a way it was true too. There was none who could equal Sharad's record, either before or after him. As time, the great healer would later tell, Sharad created a record that to this day remains unbroken. He is the only man to have made 14 attempts at the matriculation examination.
